What Is Sports Massage Therapy?

Sports Massage is a specialized form of manual therapy designed to address the physiological needs of the athlete and the active individual. Unlike traditional relaxation massage, Sports Massage is a targeted intervention used to manage, manipulate, and rehabilitate soft tissues (muscles, tendons, and ligaments). It is a non-invasive treatment shown to be extremely effective in enhancing recovery and optimizing biomechanical function.

It is commonly used to treat Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS), ligament sprains, muscle strains (hamstring, calf, and groin), and repetitive strain injuries. Sports Massage can significantly reduce recovery times and prevent the transition of acute niggles into chronic injuries.

How Does Sports Massage Work?

Our therapists utilize various manual techniques, including myofascial release, trigger point therapy, and lymphatic drainage, to interact with the soft tissues and nervous system.

Sports Massage works by increasing localized blood flow and improving the permeability of the tissue membranes. This process facilitates the removal of metabolic waste products (such as lactic acid) while delivering oxygen and essential nutrients to the muscle cells.

Furthermore, the manual pressure helps to remodel scar tissue and realign collagen fibers, ensuring that the tissue remains mobile, elastic, and pain-free under the stresses of training and competition.

Is It Safe For Everyone?

No. There are certain contraindications where Sports Massage may not be appropriate. It is vital that our therapists are informed of your full medical history.

We generally do not recommend deep sports massage in cases of acute fractures, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), infectious skin conditions, or over sites of recent severe trauma until cleared by a medical professional.
